1st XI Season Review 2009 In a season what promised much at the start, the 2009 Sussex Premier League campaign was very much one to forget for Eastbourne. Firstly, let start with the stats. 8 league wins but a whopping 8 league defeats, Eastbourne’s highest number of Premier League losses since its inception in 1999. Four of the victories came against the relegated sides, Haywards Heath and Lewes. The other wins coming against the Sussex Academy, Horsham, Hastings and Three Bridges, all of which were at home. But it was the manner of the defeats that was most disappointing. Extremely low totals at home versus East Grinstead (61), Brighton (112) and away at Horsham (84) plus the two crushing defeats by Cuckfield were the fathoms of the season. Despite some of these matches including the club’s Sussex CCC professionals, not enough responsibility was taken by other individuals within the side towards their role. Definite food for thought for the winter months ahead. However, not dwelling on the negatives, there were many positives to come out of the 2009 season. Two great performances in the wins over Horsham and Hastings at the Saffrons plus two matches which ended with the scores tied at East Grinstead and Hastings, games in which Eastbourne were in the box seat to win. In terms of individuals who can hold their head up high, at the top of that list is Tom Smith (pictured). Despite county commitments at intervals during the season, ‘Smithers’ still finished with 381 runs and 30 wickets to his name. Ben Brown had a good second half to the season and weighed in as the leading run scorer with 498. Both Brown and Smith were two of the three century makers, the other being skipper Mark Tomsett. Early season, off-spinner Ollie Rayner (18 wickets) led the way with the ball. Ragheb Aga (16) and Stuart Collier (19) also played their part when available for selection. With the comings and goings in personnel, Eastbourne introduced some new blood into the first team ranks. Batsman Alex Pollard performed commendably, as did seamer Adam Brawn and spinner Joe Barnett. There were also flashes from Ollie Ody too. However, the step up from second team cricket to first eleven is such a vast gap that coming into the side and being expected to cut it straight away against county pros and seasoned league campaigners is such an arduous task. A lot of hard work once again is needed over the winter. There will no doubt be a small merry-go-round of players for various reasons. Some of the club’s Sussex players will assess their futures, and the club needs to seek an overseas player with a decent track record. It will be a case of watch this space… Ed Annual General Meeting (AGM) Eastbourne Cricket Club's Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place on Monday 9th November 2009 at the Saffrons, 7.30pm start. Seconds clinch title without
playing (29/08/09) A big well done to 'Panno' and all the players for such a great effort throughout the season.
The sad news was announced in the early hours of Wednesday morning (22/07/09) that former player, cricket manager and colts chairman, Peter Bibby died at the age of 64 after a long battle with asbestos related cancer. Peter was a very popular man at the club and with opposing teams. The club's thoughts go to his wife Mary and daughter Mirren and to the rest of his family. 'Bibs' funeral was held on Monday 3rd August at All Souls Church in Susans Road, Eastbourne. He will be sorely missed.
